Symposium on the Economics of UBI

The Greshm Institute is proud to announce the inaugural Symposium on the Economics of UBI, which will discuss the economic theory of UBI and explore its implications for the broader fields of monetary economics and macroeconomics. This first iteration will convene online to gather economic thinkers, researchers, and other intellectuals to complement the traditional paradigms of UBI discourse.

The conversation surrounding UBI has been dominated by debates about ethics, political advocacy, and social safety nets. Economics tends to enter the picture mostly through microeconomic models of poverty alleviation, comparisons to social safety nets, welfare, or social assistance programs, etc. While these perspectives are valuable, they frequently overlook the profound systemic implications of UBI.

Even when the economics of UBI is not ignored, people tend to become interested in it only after making up their mind about UBI itself. The economics is secondary and superficial. This event seeks to elevate the discussion of UBI by establishing a fundamentally macroeconomic intellectual foundation.

The political momentum for UBI has outpaced its theoretical development. We invite you to join us in closing that gap.

The Urgency of a New Paradigm

Our current economic system depends on people receiving money from jobs. To keep the system going, we rely on a complex, often fragile, financial architecture to push money to workers through jobs. Meanwhile, advances in AI and automation threaten those jobs.

Technology intended to free us from toil threatens to deprive us of our livelihoods. We require economic theory that can help us resolve this seeming contradiction.

Key Themes and Topics

  • Productivity: AI and Automation
  • Monetary and Macroeconomic Theory
  • Full Employment vs. Over-Employment
  • Inflation and Financial Stability
  • Economic Policy

Who Should Attend?

The Symposium on the Economics of UBI is intended for:

  • Academics and Students in economics, political economy, and related fields who want to engage with UBI on an intellectual level.
  • UBI Advocates and Opponents who are ready for a deeper discussion of the economics of UBI.
  • Policy Makers and Advisors looking for economic stabilization frameworks that move beyond traditional fiscal and monetary interventions.
  • Anyone who is UBI-curious and wants to skip the politics.

Join the Conversation

The UBI movement has plenty of activists; what it urgently needs now are rigorous thinkers and learners. The Greshm Institute’s Symposium on the Economics of UBI is a call to those who are unwilling to leave the complex thinking to someone else.

By attending, you will contribute to a critical thread in the UBI narrative focused on the underlying structure of our monetary and economic systems.
